Chingay 2016 represents our first step towards SG100 after our milestone SG50 celebrations where Singaporeans from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate the core values important to Singapore and thus, Chingay 2016's theme is "Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore", and "智慧灯海,璀璨新加坡" in Chinese. As the theme suggests, Chingay 2016 will be the brightest ever will the biggest full scale illuminated show. Together we celebrate these values that have transformed us from a fishing village into a modern metropolis and bring us forward into the future with confidence. This theme is inspired by the legacy of our Founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and the values embodied by our Pioneers such as Racial Harmony and Social Cohesion, Caring Community, Resilience as a Nation, Can-Do Singapore Spirit and Uphold high moral values. The modern Chingay parade began in 1973 and has evolved over the years into a multicultural event which includes participants of diverse ethnicities and nationalities.  Chingay is actually equivalent to the Mandarin word 'Zhuang Yi' (妆艺) which means “the art of costume and masquerade” in the Hokkien dialect. In the past I never really knew much about about  and I did not really understand the meaning behind it. Chingay was actually first mooted by the Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who was also the chairman of the People’s Association (PA) to compensate for the ban on firecrackers, a customary New Year practice to drive away evil spirits with its noise and gaiety. A total of 8,000 performers from 150 different organizations were present.

Before going to the preview on 30 January, we were given a introduction about Chingay and they explained things about Chingay to us.

When we arrived at the venue, everyone was hyped and were very excited for the event. To be honest, my favourite part of that night however, was not any of the performances. But rather, at the very end when they spammed music and all of us stood up and sang (screamed) to the music. My friends and I were all very high and it was as though we took drugs.

During the segment called "Because We Are Different, We Are One", we got to see for the first time in Chingay's history, an item presented by the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO)  and their collaboration with 30 religious groups. We also saw various Special Effects including the "Lighted LED Flying Dragon" and Multicultural performances such as the Chinese, Malay and Imdian Cultural performances. From performers to spectators, Chingay's celebrates as one where age, race, language and creed are no barriers. This  year, there were also 8,000 'Sky Lanterns' which will be used as performance props to light     up the evening. All of us spectators were also given hand-held light bulbs (Which is still working perfectly well)

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed this Chingay experience and I have learnt so much from it. If I were given an option to participate in Chingay again, I would not hesitate to say 'Yes!'.

Hi! I am Valerie Tan Hwee Chin from Class 2K. I am an ex-Rulangnite. I  live very near to RV, thus, it is very easy for me to get to school. I have a sister named Jolene who is 11 this year.

I may seem very quiet, but I am not once I get to know someone better and my good friends are the only ones who can see the crazy side of me!

My favourite subject is Mathematics. I have no idea why but I can understand numbers easier than words. I am okay with Science and English but my Chinese is terrible.

My CCA is NCC and I really like NCC a lot! If I were given a chance to re choose my CCA, I will definitely choose NCC. In NCC, we get to do a whole lot of sports and we also get to perform (Freestyle Drill and PDS) unlike other sports or performing arts CCAs which only focuses on one thing. So by being in NCC, we get to enjoy the best of both worlds, sports and performing arts.

I am looking forward to OELP this year for cid as I have very good past experiences of going overseas with my friends and I feel that I will get to know everyone better (and maybe discover their greatest secrets too) through this trip.
